FOR SCHOOLS, UNIVERSITIES AND EXAM CENTRES

AI marking for your own exams, with your own rubric

Bring your rubric, your papers and work your teachers have already marked. Bandwise marks your placement tests, end-of-term exams or academic writing tasks on your own criteria, checks itself against your teachers’ marks, and only changes how it marks when that brings it closer to them. Your teachers review every mark.

  • No AI model trained on your work
  • Tested on your own marked essays first
  • You decide what goes live

WHAT SCHOOLS USE IT FOR

Any exam you mark with a rubric

Placement tests

Mark every new student’s writing on the same rubric, quickly, so they start in the right class.

End-of-term and in-house exams

Keep the papers in your test bank, set them to a whole class, and mark them as your teachers agreed.

Academic writing rubrics

An English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or university writing rubric, with its own criteria and descriptors.

Your own mock exams

Mocks marked on your own scales alongside the IELTS, Cambridge and Michigan exams Bandwise already marks.

WHAT YOU CAN SET UP

Your exams, your papers, your marking

Your exam, your rubric

Set up your own writing and speaking tasks: up to 8 criteria each, on your own scales, scored as an average or a total, with an optional pass mark. Upload your rubric or type a descriptor for each criterion, choose what students see, and choose which exams your teachers use, your own included.

A test bank of your papers

Save each paper once, with its prompt and files, and teachers pick it when they set work for a student or a class. You decide whether only admins or every teacher can add papers. It works for official exams too.

Teach Bandwise AI your marking

Add essays your teachers have already marked: one at a time, from a spreadsheet, or straight from work they reviewed. Bandwise marks them and tells you, in plain words, how close it came, which way it leans on each criterion, and which essays it disagreed with most.

Only what helps goes live

Bandwise suggests example essays, a marking tip, or moving its marks to match your teachers’, and tries each one on your other essays first. It only offers what helps, and nothing reaches your teachers until you switch it on.

One marking style for the school

See how each teacher marks compared with Bandwise AI and with colleagues, and adjust Bandwise AI’s drafts to your school’s usual marking once your teachers have reviewed enough work.

Set it up yourself, or with us

A guided setup takes you through it one task at a time. Or let Bandwise help for 7 or 30 days: every change we make is listed for you, and making anything live stays your decision.

THE GUIDED SETUP

How Bandwise learns your marking

One task at a time, in plain words. Every step can be saved and finished later.

  1. 1
    Choose a task

One of your own exams, or a writing task of IELTS, Cambridge or Michigan.

  2. 2
    Add marked essays

Essays your teachers have marked, one at a time, from a spreadsheet, or straight from reviewed work. Aim for 20, across the range of marks; 5 is enough to start.

  3. 3
    Check Bandwise AI

It marks them without seeing your teachers’ marks, then tells you how close it came, which way it leans on each criterion, and which essays it disagreed with most.

  4. 4
    Make it better

Example essays at different levels, a marking tip for the criterion it leans on most, or moving its marks to match your teachers’. Each is tried on your other essays first.

  5. 5
    Switch on what helps

Only what brought it closer is offered. Nothing reaches your teachers until you switch it on, and you can switch it off at any time.

Your marking stays yours

Your rubric, papers, marked essays and tips are used only for your school’s marking, never to change how Bandwise marks for anyone else. Your teachers still review every mark before a student sees it. How Bandwise AI works.

QUESTIONS

Your own exams: frequently asked

Is an AI model trained on our scripts?

No. Nothing is fine-tuned. Bandwise shapes each marking request instead: your rubric and descriptors, any marking tip and example essays you switched on, and any adjustment to its marks, for your school’s work only. Switch any of it off and marking goes back to how it was.

How many marked essays do we need?

Aim for 20 per task, covering the range of marks your students get; you can start with 5. A check marks each essay once (1 credit each), and trying an improvement marks the other essays again (2 credits each). Moving Bandwise AI’s marks needs a check of at least 8 essays and costs no credits to try.

Does it work for speaking?

Yes, for your own exams. Set up speaking tasks with their own criteria, and, as an optional extra, add recordings your teachers have marked (MP3 or WAV) so Bandwise can check and adjust its speaking marks too. A speaking test uses 3 credits.

Can we use it with IELTS, Cambridge or Michigan too?

Yes. The test bank works with every exam, and you can teach Bandwise AI your marking for their writing tasks, as for your own exams. You can also choose which exams your teachers see, your own included.

Who can see our rubric, papers and marked work?

Only your school. Your school’s admins set things up, and your teachers use them. Bandwise staff can open your setup only if you let them help, for 7 or 30 days, and every change they make is listed for you. Your rubric, papers, marked essays and tips are never used to change how Bandwise marks for anyone else.

How do we start?

Your own exams, the test bank and marking like your teachers come with a school account and are switched on for each school. Email us about your exams: we’ll set up your account, and help with the setup if you’d like.

Tell us about your exams.

We set up school accounts by hand during early access. Tell us your school’s name, your exams and roughly how many teachers you have, and we’ll get you started.
