bandwise.

FOR IELTS TEACHERS

IELTS Writing and Speaking marking, with a band and feedback for every criterion

IELTS

Bandwise drafts a band for each of the four IELTS criteria, with evidence quoted from the student’s own essay or recording and a next step for each. You review and adjust it, then give students a report they can act on and a progress record measured against their target band.

THE OFFICIAL CRITERIA

What Bandwise marks, criterion by criterion

Each criterion gets its own score, evidence quoted from the student’s work and a next step. You can change any of it before it reaches a report.

WHAT YOU GET

Built for IELTS teachers

Writing Task 1 and Task 2

Upload a photo or PDF of a handwritten essay, or paste the text. You check the transcription, then get a band from 0 to 9 in half bands for Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. The task band is their average, as in the real test.

Speaking, marked from the recording

Record the test in the browser or upload an MP3 or WAV. Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy and Pronunciation are marked from the audio itself, so pronunciation feedback is based on what the student actually said. An accent is never a fault in itself.

Academic and General Training

Each student has a test type, so Task 1 is marked as an Academic report on a chart, graph or diagram, or a General Training letter, and Reading converts with the right table.

Targets and university minimums

Set each student’s target band and, if they need one, their university’s minimum. Progress shows every skill against the target and flags when the latest practice band falls below the minimum.

Mistakes corrected and explained

Grammar, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation and sentence-structure mistakes in each essay, corrected with a one-line reason, plus better ways to word what is already right and practice sheets from the student’s own sentences.

Reports in your name

A printable report for every piece of work, a private link students open on their phone, and progress emails from your own address, under your own logo and colours.

Reading, Listening and the overall band

Enter a Reading or Listening raw score out of 40 and the band appears at once, from a published, approximate conversion table (Academic and General Training Reading differ). No AI is used. Combine a full practice test into an overall IELTS band with the result calculator.

You stay the examiner

Estimates are a starting point, not a verdict. Bandwise shows the evidence for each criterion, flags what it cannot judge, and nothing reaches a student until you have reviewed it. How Bandwise AI works.

QUESTIONS

IELTS marking: frequently asked

How accurate are Bandwise’s IELTS band estimates?

Bandwise AI is checked against scripts marked by examiners before it goes live, and we track how much teachers change its bands. On average its bands are close to the examiners’, but on a single piece of work it can be half a band or a band out, in either direction. That is why you review and confirm every band before a student sees it.

Can Bandwise mark IELTS Speaking?

Yes. Record the speaking test in the browser, with pause and resume, or upload an MP3 or WAV file. It is marked on the four IELTS Speaking criteria from the audio itself, on whichever parts of the test were recorded.

Does it work for both IELTS Academic and General Training?

Yes. Choose the test type for each student. Writing Task 1 is marked as an Academic report or a General Training letter, and Reading raw scores convert with the matching table.

Is a Bandwise band an official IELTS score?

No. It is a practice estimate to support your own judgement. Bandwise is an independent tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by the British Council, IDP IELTS or Cambridge University Press & Assessment.

Can students use Bandwise on their own?

Bandwise is built for IELTS teachers and schools. Students receive the reports you review: printed, as a PDF, as a private link or in a progress email.
